I hope this note finds you and yours well and anticipating a very merry holiday season.
As I write this, the Electoral College has just confirmed the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States after a very contentious campaign and election. It is our hope that both parties can tone down the rhetoric and refocus their efforts on doing what is best for the people of the United States. The American people have been through a great deal this year and their challenges are real. To paraphrase John F. Kennedy, the people are not looking for a Democratic solution or a Republican solution. They are looking for American solutions to the challenges they face. Here’s hoping we get them.
On the home front, North Dakota United is busily preparing for the 67th Legislative Assembly. We have every reason to believe that we will see legislation that, if enacted, will negatively impact our membership. For example, there will be a bill that will limit the timeframe in which K-12 teacher contracts must be considered before an impasse is automatically declared. Public employees will again be asked to increase their contribution to their pensions. While we support a proposed 1% employer-employee increase to PERS, the increase will surely lessen the impact of any salary enhancement public employees may receive. Our higher education members, at least if the executive budget is adopted, will see additional cuts in their budgets as well as depletions in university system personnel.
So, you see that we have a great deal of work to do now and when the 67th Legislative Assembly convenes in January. To do the best job possible, we need to hear from you. Below are links to member surveys we have previously shared that, once completed and the results tabulated, will provide very important data that those of us on the lobby team can use to help us in our work. If you have not already completed the surveys, please take a few moments right now to complete the survey apropos to your profession so that we are equipped with the very best data heading into the session.
Higher Education (we have re-opened the survey many members already completed in November):
Thank you all for all you do! And thank you for your membership in North Dakota United!
