I am off to Williston to support WEA members in their negotiations in a few minutes so here is an abbreviated President’s Post:

  • As a member of the NEA Foundation Board of Directors, I can attest to the exceptional support our it provides to our members. I want you to be sure that you saw the recent announcement regarding the Envision Grants available through the Foundation.“Envision Equity Grants enable educators to test creative new ideas and innovations, demonstrating exemplary teaching and learning. They also support project-based learning and help educators to advance students’ cultural understanding and appreciation, anti-racism commitments, and understanding of civic engagement and democracy. Envision Equity grants will fund projects between $1,500 and $5,000. Grants fund activities for 12 months from the date of the award.”The deadline to apply is June 15, 2021.  The site also has a great FAQ as well as guidance for applicants.
  • As I announced at the 2021 NDU Delegate Assembly, ND United will be engaging our members across the state in the development of a strategic vision for North Dakota United. ‘Through strategic decision making and the good work of our staff and members, ND United is one of only eight state affiliates that is showing growth so far this year.  We expect continued growth, and we want to make sure that our members have a voice in developing a plan to increase membership, activate our members, and increase our influence in the state. If you would like to participate, please fill out an application. You can expect to see more communication with local leaders and members via email and social media.
  • Finally, I attended the PERS Board meeting this week and heard Hank Kim from the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems (NCPERS) and Bridgette Early from the National Public Pension Coalition (NPPC).Kim went through a study of NDPERS while Ms. Early talked about the state of pension plans across the country.  Here is the study as well as the other materials presented to the PERS Board of Directors for the June 8 meeting.
