Custer Elementary School in Mandan is a great place to learn. And one big reason for that is Laurie Mahrer.

“She’s well-known for her hard work, kindness, creativity, dependability, caring nature, enthusiasm, generosity, and so much more,” said Mercedes Jaskowiak, speech language pathologist at Custer Elementary.

That’s why Laurie – who’s a Speech Language Pathology Assistant – is one of three finalists for the North Dakota Education Support Professional of the Year.

“‘Laurie consistently goes above and beyond to support the students she works with. She has such a kind and gentle soul, and students and staff are drawn to her. She is nothing short of amazing. The education system needs more educators like Laurie,’” said North Dakota United President Nick Archuleta, reading the words of one of her nominating colleagues.

Laurie says she’s honored to receive the nomination, but she also used the ceremony held at Custer Elementary on February 5th, 2024, to highlight her colleagues: ESPs from around the school, including fellow SLPAs, custodial staff, and nutrition staff, among others.

“[Growing up], we worked together as a family. And I consider you my family here. And coming from a big family, we had to share everything: our Christmas presents, our clothes, our food, three in a bed. I’m used to sharing, so, will you share this nomination with me?” said Laurie.

One of her colleagues said this of her: “She’s so humble and never wants to draw attention to herself or all the countless deeds she does for others.”

A truth that holds even on a day set aside to celebrate her. Congratulations on the nomination, Mrs. Mahrer.
